Sofra, an established Turkish restuarant in Edmonton has expanded. Sofra Cellar has a dedicated menu and expanded wine list. Traditional Turkish amulets, ceramics and glass lanterns provided inspiration.

There is nothing more fresh than a beautifully modern Canadian home shown in its winter glory. This residence by la SHED architecture is a study in simple materials that perfectly reflect its surroundings. I love the combination of natural maple with white. It adds a lovely warmth when paired with carrara marble and concrete. Simple detailing ensures that the beauty of the natural materials becomes the focus.

These are some of my favorite finds at the Toronto Interior Design Show. Such a treat to have a glimpse at the small artisan vendors. Visual texture, especially in the form of wood grain, continues to be strongly represented.
In this already nicely laid out apartment, a few small material changes make for a much warmer environment. We replaced an electric fireplace with an alcohol-burning unit, added brick cladding to the fireplace surround and replaced the flooring with an oil-finish, wide-plank hardwood.
Thankfully, someone is paying attention to the little things in our environments that could otherwise be so ugly (and occaisonally annoying)

I am always inspired by bright designers who take it upon themselves to fix things that, upon first glance, are not design problems. It reminds me that almost every problem is a design problem. This lovely beehive hotel design was the result of some folks in Toronto concerned about the dwindling population of bees and decided that a clever design could, not only be attractive to the human eye, but also attractive to bees.
In the spirit of leaving no item undesigned, we turned our attention to garbage and cigarette butts, recently. Every little element of a space matters and impacts its users. Its also a happy day when a site amenity can be nicely designed, practically indestructable, and virtually un-stealable (ie really, frickin' heavy)

The lighting being installed in one of my residential projects is looking so right for the space: A nice marriage of heritage and modern sensibilities. The clients are beginning to settle in and make it home.

Every once in a while, I'm lucky enough to be asked to provide some guidance on exterior projects. Working with Greenjeans, we came up with a solution for a forlorn looking entrance at Associated Engineering Plaza on Jasper and 109th. I'm looking forward to seeing the plants when they are more than a day old and filling out on the metal structures. This is phase 1 with site furnishings and concrete restoration yet to come.

Even the most mundane objects are worthy of being considered for their functional and visual fit into your environment. Leave nothing undesigned. This phrase is my mantra.
Beaumont now has its very own frozen yogurt, ice cream and gelato establishment. Frozen Paradise opened tonight with a heavy concentration of tiny people (and their taller minders) busy sampling every flavour. I'm pretty partial to the Tiramisu, myself. A big congratulations to Matt and Yvette!
